Hours and Timings
The Starved Rock Park Trails are open from 7:00 a.m. to sunset, while the Starved Rock Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Starved Rock Campground gates open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. daily. The Starved Rock Lodge has separate operating hours, which can be found on their official website.
Activity Permits
Any group of 20 or more persons using Department facilities must have advance written permission from the Site Superintendent and may require additional liability coverage through an Activity Permit. These permits are required for any non-traditional use of facilities or activities that might increase potential liability to the Department. A Permit to Sell is needed if food or goods are sold, fees are charged, or when money changes hands in any manner among the organizers, spectators, and/or participants.
Dog Policy
Dogs are allowed in certain areas of the park, including the Pioneer Cabins with Two Queen Beds, outdoor Veranda, and on all trails and guided hikes promoted by the Lodge. However, they must be leashed at all times, not weigh more than 70 lbs. or two dogs with a combined weight of 70 lbs., and must be current on vaccinations and in good health. Dog owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets and ensuring they do not disturb other guests or wildlife.
Alcohol Policy
Alcohol is prohibited at the Starved Rock State Park Campground and on park trails. It is also banned in the remainder of the park property from January 1st to May 31st.
Camping Rules
Ground fires are not allowed but are permitted in the Youth Group Camping Area, as long as they are contained and not left unattended. All pets must remain on a leash and attended at all times, and quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Camping permits must be displayed on numbered posts for the campsite, and all tents must be erected within 15 feet of the gravel pad at the campsite.
Hunting Regulations
Hunting is only allowed in designated areas, such as the Starved Rock State Park Campground, during the 1st and 2nd firearm deer seasons. Portable blinds are provided at each site in the campground by park staff, and a drawing is held to fill any open blinds with DOO stand-by hunters. Hunters must check in at the campground permit booth by 6 a.m. and are required to field dress harvested deer at least 100 feet from any road or developed area.
