Yosemite National Park’s Natural Firefall, also known as the Horsetail Fall, is a unique phenomenon that occurs for a few weeks in February, when the setting sun illuminates the waterfall, making it appear as if it’s on fire. Due to its popularity and the potential for overcrowding, Yosemite National Park has implemented a reservation system for the final three weekends of February, from February 10-11, 17-19, and 24-25, 2024.
Reservation Details
To visit Yosemite National Park during the Firefall season, visitors must obtain a temporary vehicle reservation through Recreation.gov. These reservations are non-transferable and valid for seven days. The first 50% of reservations for each weekend day become available on December 1st at 8 am PST, while the final 50% become available two days before the visit. All visitors, including passholders, must still pay the $35 entrance fee or present a lifetime or annual pass.

Visitors can park at Yosemite Village and use the free shuttle to reach the Yosemite Falls Parking Area.
To view Horsetail Fall, visitors should park at Yosemite Falls parking and walk 1.5 miles (each way) to the viewing area near El Capitan Picnic Area. If this parking is full, visitors can park at Yosemite Village or Curry Village and use the free shuttle to get to Yosemite Falls parking/Yosemite Valley Lodge.
Protecting the Park
These restrictions are in place to protect the park and its visitors. In recent years, visitation around this event has increased dramatically, leading to issues such as overcrowding, litter, and unsafe conditions. By implementing a reservation system, the park aims to manage visitor numbers and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
Yosemite National Park’s Firefall is a breathtaking natural phenomenon that draws visitors from around the world. The reservation system and parking/viewing guidelines are designed to preserve the park’s natural beauty and provide a safe and memorable experience for all who visit. Whether you’re a seasoned park enthusiast or a first-time visitor, planning ahead and following the guidelines will ensure you can witness this stunning display of nature’s power and beauty.
